Car Hire in Spain

Hiring a car to travel within Spain is fast becoming a popular way to travel. The main reasons are it allows visitors to see the country at their own leisure, they can stop when they want and go wherever they please. Secondly it is proving rather cheap to hire a car now, especially with deals online that start from £10 a day inclusive of many benefits such as unlimited mileage and breakdown cover.

When driving in Spain many people will head for major cities, here are some ideas of attractions you can see in exciting cities made accessible with car hire.

Barcelona, after flying to the city you can collect your car from one one the many car hire desks in the airport. Once you leave Barcelona International Airport, you should note that you should drive on the right hand side of the road. You can then visit many sites if the city such as La Ramblas which is located approximately 10 kilometres from the airport. This is a very popular street that has many street performers, mime artists, quaint boutique shops and cafés.

Parking your car towards the bottom of La Ramblas will enable you to take a scenic walk to the Santa Monica section of the street as it is right near the port. It is here you will find a statue dedicated to Christopher Columbus and a Maritime Museum.

Another city that is easily accessed by car is the capital of Spain, Madrid. If travelling from Barcelona the trip should take around 7 hours by car, and the city is clearly signposted along the way. Once you get the the city you will find many attractions such as watching a cultural yet highly exciting traditional bull fight. The most popular ring in which to view this activity is at the Ventas Bullring. It is known for being hardcore and the fights are as frequent as every week. For a more laid back and luxurious activity then head to Chocolate Con Churros, it is here you can indulge in a chocolate snack such as fondue at the cities famous establishment.

If you want to take a piece of Spanish history home with you, then Madrid has many antique shops. Every Sunday a market is held in Ribera de Curtidores names Rastro. It is advised to get there early as it gets very busy and closes in the afternoon. If you miss the market then you can still suppress your appetite for antique bargains by visiting one of the many shops such as Nueva Galerias which is located on the same street.

For a more modern shopping experience a short drive to Salamanca in the north east of the city will reveal many designer shops such as Versace, Armani and Hugo Boss.

Other sites within the city include Reina Sofa Art Museum which is located on 52 Santa Isabel. The museum features many art pieces from the 20th century including sculptures and paintings.

Car Hire question by troymuqbil: What is the best car hire company for us to use in America?
My friend and I are both 21 and are looking to road trip in America this summer (mid-June to early July) and we need to hire a car. Our journey takes us through Nevada, California and Arizona. We are travelling for 22 days. It is only us and we both intend to drive the hired car. Being aged 21-24 we are often subject to an additional charge per day. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Can anyone recommend a company which would be the cheapest for our situation?

Nice vehicle – looks similar to the SUV we hired in southern California recently. You probably saw more of Vancouver Island than we did. We took the ferry over from Port Angeles, Washington and didn’t hire a car – just stayed in downtown Victoria for 2 days.

Looks like you’ll soon be posting your Borchart Gardens photos. Looking forward to it!

thanks Pat & Ken….. I loved the car for all its gadgets… like the seats could be warmed & electronically moved up & down or forward & backwards….. (great fun)….. the little digital compass was great too that told you which direction you were going in….. Pat – we got the ferry from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay & coming back from Duke Point to Twassen….. Borrchart Gardens photos are coming up next….. i must say the gardens were just perfect in everyway – so beautiful…. …. they left a lasting impression with us…..
